About

Hey there!

This is one of my side projects to keep me sane and I work on it in my spare time so updates might not happen too regularly!!

But the main reason behind this site and where it started is as follows:

My father was into photography – He shot in super 8 (video) and 35mm (stills) ALL the time when my brother and I were growing up. He captured so much, but did it in a way that wouldn’t affect the experience of what our family was doing – whether it was a family outing or an inerstate holiday (take note!!!).  I didn’t think too much of it at the time, but he spent a lot of time when we got home editing video (circa 1970s…. much different to today) and getting pics and slides developed.

Back in the day we had video nights – he would set up the video 8 projector and we would watch the home videos. It was a lot fo fun but I didn’t realise at the time just how valuable these times and experiences were.

Unlike me 🙂 he really looked after his stuff.  He properly stored the Super 8 films and slides (soooooo many slides) so it would reduce the deterioration of such media. Who knew back then how long these things would last? Mind you, I still don’t know 100% now!

Fast forward many years…….. my dad is in his late 80s/early 90s and dementia starts. He doesn’t spend any more time on his photography/video hobby but still all his media and equipment is in excellent condition. The video gear looks like it was only bought the day before – still in original boxes with instructions manuals and all still working. Amazing stuff. We all know they don’t make stuff now like they used to so that helped also. As I have photography as a hobby myself for a few years I start to get interested in just what he has captured during my years as a child. I came across a goldmine….and so many great memories too! I realise how important it is to preserve my childhood and how to do it. Being a technology nerd helps me too. And thus begins my journey to digitise all my dad’s old stuff. And also share how I am doing it – hence this site.

I don’t have unlimited funds so I may not use the best equipment and methods but what I am doing works well. I am constantly learning but my main aim is preservation for my kids and grandkids to enjoy also. If you are are in Sydney, Australia I can help (for a small fee).
